With the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 scheduled to take place later in the year in India this Tri-Series in Sri Lanka between the hosts India and South Africa becomes a great stage of preparation for the marquee event. All teams will face each other twice in the round-robin phase before the top two sides meet in the final for the silverware. The tournament opener will see Sri Lanka Women taking on India Women at R.Premadasa Stadium Colombo on Sunday (April 27).
As we all know Chamari Athapaththu and Harmanpreet Kaur will lead Sri Lanka and India respectively. Kashvee Gautam N Shree Charani and Shuchi Upadhyay are the three names that have been added to the Women in Blue’s squad for the first time. Gautam impressed during the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 bowling right-arm medium and showcasing a lower-order hitting talent for Gujarat Giants Women while Charani was given a few matches by Delhi Capitals Women.
Meanwhile Upadhyay has featured for Madhya Pradesh Women in domestic cricket and also impressed in various domestic matches with her left-arm spin. Harmanpreet who missed the last home series versus Ireland Women will have the run machine Smriti Mandhana as her deputy.
Mandhana and Pratika Rawal have started well as an opening pair with the two making a mockery of West Indies Women and Irish Women at home earlier in the summer scoring a lot of runs with ease. Harleen Deol Deepti Sharma Jemimah Rodrigues Richa Ghosh and Tejal Hasabnis continue their battle wearing the Blue jersey.
Despite a decent WPL Shafali Verma hasn’t been considered for selection while Renuka Singh Thakur Pooja Vastrakar and Titas Sadhu aren’t part of this tour as they are recovering from their respective injuries.
Apart from the Indian skipper Sneh Rana Yastika Bhatia Arundhati Reddy and Amanjot Kaur are back in the ODI set-up while Uma Chetry Raghvi Bist Sayali Satghare Tanuja Kanwar Minnu Mani Priya Mishra and Saima Thakor didn’t find a place in the squad despite going okay in the previous ODI series. Malki Madara Dewmi Vihanga Rashmika Sewwandi and Piumi Badalge have received their maiden ODI call-ups. Inoka Ranaweera Hasini Perera and Hansima Karunaratne have returned to the squad while Imesha Dulani Sachini Nisansala Kaushini Nuthyangana Chethana Vimukthi and the injured Udeshika Prabodhani fail to make the cut. Sri Lanka will heavily rely on their skipper in all departments with Vishmi Gunaratne Harshitha Samarawickrama Kavisha Dilhari Nilakshika Silva and Anushka Sanjeewani giving strength to their batting department.
The bowling front will see Sugandika Kumari Inoshi Priyadharshani Achini Kulasuriya and all-rounder Dilhari. There could be a few debutants featuring in the curtain-raiser of this Tri-Series. Both teams will aim to cover as many areas as possible before the ODI World Cup and strengthen their sides while also looking for a win. Which team will begin the tournament on a high?
